Chillin' in the Grenadines - Chatham Bay

After spending 4 days in the Tobago Cays, our plan was to head to Mustique for New Year's. Mustique is an island of the rich and famous whose local cast includes Mick Jagger, Shania Twain and Bryan Adams.  Our plan was to dine for NYE at Basil's Bar a famous oceanside watering hole. We pulled up anchor and set sail, pointing the bow north. While sailing out of the Cays we passed close astern of several mega yachts complete with helicopters. Unfortunately for them, they are too large to enter the lagoon so are stuck out in much rougher waters making it difficult for their guests to get ashore.  As we sailed upwind towards Mustique the strong trade winds were against us and the waves were building. The boat was slamming into it and we were working harder than we needed to. We had no firm agenda, so Roger and I looked at each other and said, why bother?  Thus we turned around and headed in exactly the opposite direction heading for a beautiful secluded little spot we know of on Union Island called Chatham Bay. 

As we arrived in Chatham Bay, Pirate was excited because she saw a ship she might like to sail on. Yes it was an old fashion yacht that resembled a true Pirate Ship. 




Soon after setting our anchor, JJ from Therapy, came by in his dinghy to see if we would like a BBQ on the beach.  While we were good without yet another beach BBQ, we wanted to support the industrious people of Union Island who are still recovering from the hurricane.  Thus, appropriately attired in t-shirts and bare feet, we headed ashore at 5:30 for a beautiful sunset and an oceanside dinner at the very finest dining establishment in the Bay.











For New Year's Eve, we decided to do surf and turf on Adventure I's BBQ - steak, jerk chicken and shrimp, with some twice baked potatoes and cinnamon carrots.  I think Adventure I is actually the best restaurant in the Bay 😉

  Tobago Cays and Union Island - More Beach Bars - Go Figure Imagine warm crystal blue water, pristine white sandy beaches, palm trees and turtles, and you can imagine the Tobago Cays.  The Tobago Cays (different than Trinidad and Tobago) are a small set of uninhabited islands surrounded by Horseshoe Reef, with nothing else between you and the open ocean.  This is a marine sanctuary so, whether you are mooring or anchored, the charge is $60 EC per night, plus $15 per person on board.  If you stay three nights, you get a fourth free, however most people come in and out for one night as they are typically charter boats on a schedule. Haul Out and the Hotel California  - You Cannot Make This S&%* Up! After a few days at Le Phare Bleu Marina in the southern end of Grenada, we headed to Clarke's Court Marina for haul out.  It is a very professional operation with the largest travel lift I have ever seen.   The lift made our boat look tiny.  Hauling or launching is always a concerning time for a boat owner as many things can go wrong. Back in Grenada - Looking Through Fresh Eyes Welcome Back!  Pirate's Adventures in the Caribbean continue.   In December last year, we left the British Virgin Islands and sailed our boat south to Grenada.  Over the following 3 months, we visited 9 different islands and covered about 700 nautical miles.  Our plan this time is to head north, island hopping back to the British Virgin Islands.  Eventually we will leave the boat in Antigua for the summer.   We arrived back in Grenada on December 10th, 2024, 7 months since we left Adventure I up on the hard at Clarke's Court Marina.  We left the boat there because it is apparently out of the hurricane belt and so insurers have preferred that location.  However, that changed this summer when the very first named Hurricane of the season, Beryl, hit Grenada.
